Manny Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley’s second fight is a “tossup,” says longtime boxing writer Larry Merchant.

“You can’t say enough about Manny and where he was when he first came to America, and how he evolved as a boxer-puncher,” Merchant told RingTV in a recent interview. “In that fight, against Rios, he fought just as a boxer. But he’s not going to be able to beat Bradley just as a boxer. You can never dismiss a fighter of Manny’s proven qualities.”

However, Merchant cites the age of Pacquiao–who turned 35 in December–as a deciding factor for a likely Bradley victory. He also noted Bradley’s victory over Juan Manuel Marquez and Pacquiao’s loss to the same fighter in 2012.

“Tim Bradley is a younger guy and he still thinks that he’s got stuff to prove, and that’s what makes Bradley who he is,” Merchant said. “Bradley wins every place that he goes. If there is any resistance, he wears you out. He’s a damn good figher.”

The first Pacquiao-Bradley fight ended in a controversial decision victory for Bradley.

Merchant, however, noted that Pacquiao hasn’t “had one bad round in 10 years or one bad 10 seconds.”

“So you don’t just dismiss him because he showed that he’s still eager to do it in his last fight. The quesion is whether he can make as big a change in doing that as he would have to to beat Bradley. The question for Manny is whether he will have the ability and the fire to force a fight, and to return a little bit to his previous incarnations,” he said.

Bradley and Pacquiao will face each other in Las Vegas on April 12.

In a recent interview, Bradley said that he’s satisfied with his training thus far, adding that he’s ahead of Pacquiao.

“I’m feeling great. I’m ahead of schedule right now. I’m not killing my body,” Bradley was quoted by FightHype.com as saying. “I did 12 weeks last training camp for the Pacquiao fight. I think I was ready around eight weeks. It was hard man, because I had to taper really early then pick up again at the end,” he continued.

Bradley said that his weight is “great” and “my weight’s down.”

“I’m in the low [1]60s. I got about 15 pounds to drop within the next two months and that’s normal for me. Normally I’m around 170, 175 [pounds]. I got up to 185 after the Pacquiao fight the first time,” he said.

Pacquiao is currently training with lightweight American Lydell Rhodes, who said he was impressed with Pacquiao’s power and speed.

“He’s a complete fighter. He has the speed, power and brain. He’s a flyweight who punches like a middleweight,” Rhodes told the Inquirer, adding: “It is a great opportunity for me to work with Manny Pacquiao. His ring achievements and by just seeing how hard he trains for the fight motivates me.”

Their first fight on June 9, 2012, ended with one of the most controversial decisions in boxing history.

Ring announcer Michael Buffer's proclamation, "...And the new WBO welterweight champion, Timothy 'Desert Storm' Bradley", sent shock waves through the MGM Grand Garden Arena, especially on press row, where nearly every writer scored the fight for Manny Pacquiao. Many believed it wasn't even close.

Bradley's split-decision victory ended Pacquiao's welterweight title reign as well as his seven-year, 15-bout win streak. It also set off a chain of events that included an investigation by the Nevada attorney general's office (which uncovered no foul play), and the WBO conducting its own judging of the fight (a unanimous decision for Pacquiao).

Nearly two years later, Bradley-Pacquiao II is set for April 12 at the MGM Grand. A press conference Tuesday in Los Angeles officially announced the fight. Both fighters seemed happy to have an opportunity to clear up one of the sport's great controversies.

"I want my title back and I am prepared to endure my hardest training camp ever to win this fight against Tim Bradley," Pacquiao, a Filipino congressman, said. "It is very exciting to be returning to Las Vegas. And as always, I dedicate this fight to my countrymen throughout the world and to bring glory to the Philippines."

Pacquiao (55-5-2, 38 KOs) has endured the worst moment of his Hall-of-Fame career since that loss, a sixth-round knockout by Juan Manuel Marquez in December 2012. He came back from that fight with an impressive unanimous decision victory against Brandon Rios last November in Macau.

Bradley (31-0, 12 KOs) called the aftermath of the Pacquiao victory one of the darkest periods of his life, saying that criticism of the Pacquiao decision sent him into a period of depression.

But his life changed for the better when he fought Russian Ruslan Provodnikov last March. He engaged in a brutal 12-round slugfest with Provodnikov that ended up being 2013's fight of the year. Bradley was concussed early and nearly knocked out twice, but won a unanimous decision.

Bradley, known up to then as a defensive fighter, was praised for engaging with Provodnikov and providing the most entertaining fight of his career.

He followed that with another impressive outing, a split decision victory against Marquez in October, to remain undefeated.

"This fight is to get the credit I did not get the first time," Bradley said Tuesday. "I must beat Pacquiao as convincingly as I beat Juan Manuel Márquez."

Bradley's trainer, Joel Diaz, agreed. "This is a fight which will give us peace of mind after the controversy of our first fight," Diaz said. "We have to win and make it clear. It's not going to be easy for Pacquiao if he thinks he can beat Bradley. I will guarantee that."

Pacquiao's Hall of Fame trainer, Freddie Roach, who also handles Provodnikov, praised Bradley's toughness.

"Tim Bradley is one of the toughest guys in the world and I saw that up close when he fought Ruslan Provodnikov last year," Roach said. "Tim looked even better in beating Márquez in his last fight. Tim is the champion and Manny and I know we have our work cut out for us to successfully challenge him on April 12."

Top Rank's 82-year-old Hall of Fame CEO Bob Arum, who promotes both fighters, deeply criticized the judges' decision in that first fight. It was Arum who called for the Nevada AG's investigation. He also said Bradley told him before the decision was announced, "I tried hard but I couldn't beat the guy."

Bradley, who came into that fight as a 7-2 underdog, was furious over Arum's reaction, yet recently re-upped with Top Rank.

"At long last a competitive super fight," Arum said. "I am sure the sports books in Las Vegas are gearing up for huge two-way action."

Jay Rood, Vice President of Race & Sports for MGM Resorts International, said this fight's price will be much closer than the first time.

"Our opening number is Pacquiao -180 and +160 for Bradley, which means Manny is slightly less than a 2-to-1 favorite," Rood said. "This line may in fact move up and down with most of our action picking up during fight week in April."
